Improve the yield: check the nip load distribution

Non-uniform nips usually lead to wrinkles, web breaks and poor sheet profiles. These are all costly problems that can ruin the machine’s runnability and yield.

With Fuji Pressure Sensitive Film it is easy detect uneven loads, incorrect crowning, misalignment and damaged or defective roll covers.

Better runnability

The coated sides of both transfer sheets (with the matte finish) must face each other. When pressure is applied, the microcapsules are broken and the color-forming material transfers to the color-developing material and chemically reacts, generating a red color.

The higher the pressure, the more capsules will burst and the more intense the color will be.

Feltest supplies Fuji Pressure Sensitive Film in all sensitivities (see underneath), but two types are most commonly used for paper machine press nips:

- For soft nips with one rubber-covered press roll: Fuji Film LLW

- For hard nips, like steel-on-steel or steel-on-stone: Fuji Film LW

FAQ's

What does the press load distribution between two mating rolls look like? Use our Fujifilm!

One side of the film contains micro-capsules, the other a color-developing layer. Under pressure the micro-capsules bust and red patches will appear on the film. The higher the pressure, the more capsules will burst and the more intense the color will be.

Fuji Pressure Sensitive Film is the advanced troubleshooting tool to identify all kinds of nip deviations. These are a few examples of how you can interpret the results:

• Uneven load
• Incorrect crowning (picture A)
• Misalignment (picture B)
• Damaged roll covers (picture C)
• Soft spots in roll covers (picture D)
• (Partially) worn roll covers (picture E)

Fuji Pressure Sensitive Film is most commonly used to detect non-uniform load distribution in the press section, the size press and the calendar. Other applications are for example checking the winding quality of the re-winder and gaskets of the steam and condensate system.

Feltest supplies Fuji Pressure Sensitive Film in all sensitivities, but two types are most commonly used for paper machine press nips:

- For soft nips with one rubber covered press roll: Fuji Film LLW

- For hard nips, like steel-on-steel or steel-on-stone: Fuji Film LW

The main difference is: Carbon Paper tells you that the local pressure is over a certain threshold value, but not how much. FujiFilm for Nip Impressions tells you the exact level of pressure, so you can measure it.
