CALIPER

Measuring the felt caliper (or ‘thickness’) is most valuable when you combine the results with information on the  felt permeability and moisture content

  • a felt is contaminated when it is thick and dense
  • a felt is (still) new when it is thick and open
  • a felt is worn when it is thin and open
  • a felt is compacted when it is thin and dense

  • the caliper strongly affects the startup or break-in time of a new felt
  • problems like edge drop-offs or edge flipping are being influenced by caliper variances
