Press Felt Caliper

In combination with a permeability test and/or water content measurement the caliper becomes an important felt parameter. A felt can be thin due to wear (high permeability) or because it is compacted (low permeability). When it is relatively thick, it can be contaminated (low permeability) or not compacted at all (high permeability).

Felt compaction curves

High speed machines with nip dewatering need compacted press felts. To reduce the break-in time the felt must compact as quickly as possible and then remain constant as long as possible - the red line in this chart.

Only with the Feltest Caliper Profiler it is possible to accurately measure the felt caliper on the running machine, helping the paper maker and felt supplier to optimize press felt performance.

Feltest products to measure the caliper of press felts

Feltest offers the following product to measure the caliper of press felts on the running machine:

Feltest Caliper Profiler

The Feltest Caliper Profiler is the only instrument that was designed from scratch to be used on running paper machines. Due to its high spring load it gives accurate and repeatable resuIts that can be used to make compaction curves (see left) or estimate felt wear.

With the profiling function over 30 cm (approx. 1') it has proved to be a usefull tool when analysing edge problems on pick up felts!
