Press Felt Tension

Why measure the tension in press felts?

If the felt tension is too low, it could go through the nip with a wrinkle. This will surely destroy the felt, making a direct replacement necessary. It also not good for the press rolls, depending on speed, roll covers, press lay-out etc.

Too high tension will increase the risk of felt being torn out of the machine; a very dangerous event for people and machinery. Especially seamed felts are sensitive to higher tension levels; the seam area can be opend up, leading to hydraulical and mechanical marking in the paper.
